I love the beach as much as anyone—but if you’re like me, you hate bringing beach sand and salt back with you. To keep your ride looking sharp, you don’t want to go too long without giving your vehicle a proper wash and/or detail.
Washing salt and sand off is a must, but there are a few other tricks to know about I’ve learned over the years. Here are 5 of my favorite tips for your post-beach trip to keep your car clean, protected from the elements, and salt and sand-free.
1. Rinse the exterior thoroughly
You can rinse a ton of salt and sand from your vehicle’s paint with a simple sprayer attachment, so start there before applying soap. In most cases, I don’t use a pressure washer for regular maintenance washing, but a bit more water pressure is a safer way to blast away sand compared to hand washing.
If at the coast long term, you should still rinse off sand and salt from time to time. Even if your car isn’t moving, built-up layers of sand and salt will chew through a clear coat.
2. Add layers of protection to your vehicle’s clear coat
Before you hit the beach and after you return, I highly recommend applying a protective coating. You apply sunscreen to your skin before summer vacation—and your ride should be no different.
There are tons of waxes, sealants, and coatings to choose from based on your preferences. The most important thing to remember is if you’ll be near sand and salt, make sure your paint is protected.

3. Use an undercarriage hose attachment
Did you know there is a device that you can use to get rid of all that sand and salt underneath your car? It’s called an undercarriage sprayer attachment; this device attaches to any pressure washer and is designed to be rolled underneath your vehicle.

If you’re already using a pressure washer to remove sand, this simple attachment sprays streams of water underneath your vehicle—an area often neglected. These devices are great to use periodically, especially in the winter if you encounter salt on the roads.
4. Use microfiber towels to wipe down the interior
Since microfiber is designed to grab tiny particles, they are excellent at removing sand in cupholders, dashboards, and other crevices.
Be sure to separate these towels from other microfiber towels used on seats or paint, and shake them off outside as you go. Microfiber tends to lift the dry sand particles much easier s there’s no need to wet the sand with detailing spray.
Have plently of microfiber towels on hand, some of which you can use to remove particles like sand. I recommend separating towels by color based on where they’re used. For example, you may reserve green towels for sand and debris removal, and reserve white towels for exterior use only.
5. Try this vacuuming trick for sandy carpets
After you shake all the sand off your car’s mats, try setting a cordless polisher or sander (with no disk) on the carpeted surface.
The vibration will cause sand particles to bounce to the surface so your vacuum attachment can suck everything up.
This trick is a pretty clever way to get rid of grit you can’t see. After all, cleaning the often neglected nooks and crannies is what separates immaculate cars from all the rest. Give it a try!
