So is it safe to use a sponge and soap to wash your car…and does it matter? The simple answer is a sponge is not the safest device to apply soap to when your car’s paint is dirty.
But like many things…it helps to understand why.
Why sponges are more prone to creating scratches
Whenever a flat sponge slides across your vehicle, it tends to slide contaminants like tiny rocks, rather than pick them up. As a result, these jagged particles get trapped underneath the sponge and ‘etch’ tiny scratches with every sliding or circular motion of the sponge.
Since the sponge is flat, these particles have nowhere to escape, and end up creating tiny cuts or abrasions in the clear coat (even though our eyes may not notice until later).
That’s essentially how circular swirl marks are formed!
Sponges can be safely used on areas of your car like the wheels or glass because these surfaces aren’t soft like a car’s clear coat. Many bug ‘sponges’ and tire brushes have their place in detailing in certain use cases.
Why microfiber is the preferred material for washing car paint
Since microfiber is designed to lift rather than slide, it’s the go-to material in auto detailing for applying soap suds by hand. Contaminants on the clear coat essentially get ‘picked up’ by the microfiber. In the past, natural fiber mitts like lambswool were the go-to alternative to sponges, but today they’re not quite as popular (or soft) as synthetic microfiber.

When to use sponges and porous applicators in auto detailing
Sponges and other porous applicators like foam are ideal when you need to release or spread a product, while microfiber is better at removing a product (like car wax).
That’s why trim restore kits come with foam applicators; porous materials are better at contouring and spreading products evenly on bumpers, trim, and other non-painted surfaces.
It’s perfectly safe to use a foam applicator on a car’s clear coat when applying a ceramic coating. Since the surface must be completely cleansed of dirt and contaminants for a ceramic coating to bond, the scratch risk is effectively zero.

If you’ve already washed your car with a sponge…it’s not the end of the world! There are just safer ways to remove dirt, like using microfiber and treating your car with snow foam using a foam cannon if it’s covered in dirt.
At the end of the day, you’re less likely to create scratches when washing if you use plenty of soap for lubrication AND use proper technique. A dirty microfiber mitt (that hasn’t been rinsed off) will be less safe to use than a clean sponge.
